Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (Fortescue) has selected a TETRA digital voice and data communications network for their mining operations in Western Australia. The new TETRA system comprises DAMM infrastructure and Sepura hand-held and mobile terminals. Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mining operations was the first site to deploy the TETRA network with further mine, rail and port facilities expected to follow.
Fortescue was founded in 2003 and in a few short years has become one of the world’s largest producers of iron ore.?The construction project of Fortescue’s port, rail and mine commenced in February 2006 and by late 2008 operations were already underway at the company’s Cloudbreak minesite and more than 15 million tonnes of Fortescue iron ore had been exported to China through the Herb Elliott Port at Port Hedland. Listed in the S&P/ASX 50 share index, Fortescue has firmly established itself as one of the world’s largest producers and sea-borne traders of iron ore.
The Christmas Creek TETRA network consists of multi-node redundant dual carrier TetraFlex® Base Stations, all linked via corporate and wireless IP, providing seamless roaming and extensive radio coverage of the mine. The more than 500 SRG3900 mobile and 300 STP8000 portable terminals supplied by Sepura provide class leading RF power, audio and functional capabilities ideal for the harsh environment for the region.
The network will be managed by the TetraFlex® IP based Dispatcher, Call Database Record Management, Statistics, Voice Recording Log Servers and Network Management Systems.

Once complete, Fortescue radio users will have the flexibility of travelling across all mine, rail and port sites and count on seamless voice and data communications to all points of their network.
